The 2004 Indian Tsunami - Deadliest Earth Seismic Activity in past 5 centuries

Preface about the Tsunami:
- Date: 24th of December, 2004
- Subductive (underwater) earthquake which results in tsunami
- Magnitude of 9.1-9.3
- Casualties: approximately 230 000 people died
- Regions affected: Aceh (Indonesia), Tamil Nadu (India), Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives
- Second deadliest earthquake ever recorded in seismograph

Occurrence and aftershocks:
- 1600 km Indian fault line of the tectonic plates ruptured or slipped 15 meters along the
subduction zone with the Burma Plate
- The earthquake results in ripple in water that enlarges as the ripples going nearer to the
shore, creating tsunami more than 10 metes tall
- Aftershocks are produced, with the highest recorded with 8.7 magnitude originating off the
coast of Nias island

Post Aids and further humanitarian response:
- As a response to the tsunami in Aceh, the Taiwan government donated $ 2 million
information and communication technology center to Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh
- During the day itself, significant aids were given to bury the bodies to prevent diseases
- World Food Programme provided food aid worth the supply of 1.3 million people for the
victims
- UK donated about US $600 000 000, collected from the public
